Mens Doubles Championships
July 21st 2008
These were held on Sunday 20th July, in windy but dry conditions. At times there were more spectators than competitors so thanks to everyone who came to watch and to Tak for organising the day. Last minute withdrawals meant for a gruelling league stage where all pairs played 6 sets with the top two competing in a single set final and the 3rd and 4th playing for the plate.
Joe and David Lukens retained their title, beating Marcel Lambert and Mike Fieldsend in the final while Owen Greenway and David Hughes beat Alex and Tak Ho in the plate final.

Ladies Doubles Club Championships
July 21st 2008
This was a great afternoon of tennis. There was a round robin first with the top two going through to the final and the bottom two playing for the plate. Ann and Tracy topped the round robin and played Anna and Caroline whilst Sarah and Jackie played Jeanette and Alison.
The main final was a very close match with Anna and Caroline just scraping through. In the plate unfortunately Jeanette was injured so Alison took on Sarah and Jackie on her own.
After such good tennis we all settled down to a great tea provided by the contestants.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and we hope more couples will enter next year.

Tracy is ladies champion again
June 10th 2008
Tracy Fieldsend won the Ladies Singles Championship again this year, beating Anna Waters 6-2 in the final. The plate competition was own by Caroline Craggs who beat Jayne Mattick 6-2.
The number of entries (4) was disappointing - a lot of people were away - but the tennis was good as was the pavlova and champagne. Thanks to Martin Turnbull for organising the day.

Planning submission for new sports hub
April 4th 2008
There was a meeting of the North Wilts DC Planning Committee last Wednesday, 2nd April to decide on all the planning applications related to the new sports hub.
Unfortunately councillors raised a number of questions which the planning officer was unable to answer so a decision was deferred. This was particularly frustrating as most of the questions have been answered already but hopefully the delay will not be long.
I will post any news on the date of the next meeting as soon as we have it.

You must come to match practice if you want to be considered for a team. League matches start on 28th April so there is not much time to sharpen that competitive edge.

Wimbledon Tickets
March 14th 2008
We have been told by the LTA that in future years (eg 2009 onwards) we should distribute our allocation of Wimbledon tickets (usually about 13 pairs, Centre and No 1 courts) by ballot of British Tennis members only. Membership of British Tennis is free to all club members for this year but adults will be charged (£7.50) in 2009-10.
So this will be the last year under the present system which is:
A ballot of all club members including Juniors and Honorary members. Names are drawn out of a hat at a club event in April / May (as soon as we have notification of ticket allocation to us). All winners (one set of tickets go as the main raffle prize at the end of season party) are phoned and given a a list of available dates and told the earliest time they can phone back to reserve a date, to give everyone the same chance of getting their first choice. Tickets are then allocated on a first come first served basis.
This system has evolved as the fairest and most efficient way of allocating the tickets. It gives all club members an equal chance of winning a seat and all the winners an equal chance of getting the dates they want.
Last year’s winners were Owen Greenway, Wayne Hazell, Martin Warnes, Oliver Maher, Callum Garlick, Mike Thomas, Colin Balson, Ro Tuckett, Kate Dymoke, Sam Snell, Max Brennan, Emily Steel and Philip Hedditch.
